VR1
is the nick-name of monitor-headed football referee, the character (and brand)
of this football parody cartoon series.
It is
stands for Video Replay 1. Just as in CR7 for Cristiano Ronaldo 7
VR1 adalah sebutan untuk seorang wasit
berkepala monitor, karakter (dan juga merek) serial kartun parodi ini.
Ia adalah singkatan dari Video Replay 1.
Seperti CR7 untuk Cristiano Ronaldo 7.
I
invented this character in early 2011, during a time when our (Indonesian)
football is torn in never-ending legal dispute over the football association,
resulting in the running of 2 separate professional leagues – one of them said
to be a renegade league. This renegade league – supposedly – tried to ‘improve’
the quality of professional football competition, and one of the ways they
attempted to do this was by ‘importing’ foreign referees, which they perceived
to be ‘better’ than local ones.

The
name and monitor head of this character imply on a number of meanings:
Referees
often make controversial and wrong decisions due to their limited view of
incidents that might be caused by their position on the field and how fast in
time the incident happen.
One
luxury that we, as audience, and football commentators have that referees do
not have is the facility of video replay. Through video replay, we can see
incidents not only from multiple angles, but also in slow motion, allowing us
to see in detail of what actually happens.
In
the context of VR1 cartoons, we can look back to past football stories and
enjoy seeing them from a different (humorous) perspective/angle).

| Mr. Replay and Beyond |
Nama dan kepala monitor karakter ini
menyampaikan beberapa makna:
Wasit seringkali membuat keputusan yang
kontroversial dan salah karena keterbatasan pandangan mereka pada sebuah
insiden yang dapat disebabkan oleh posisi mereka di lapangan dan begitu cepat
terjadinya insiden tersebut.
Satu kemewahan yang dimiliki kita, sebagai
penonton, dan para komentator namun tidak dimiliki wasit adalah fasilitas video
replay. Melalui video replay, kita dapat melihat insiden tidak hanya dari
berbagai sudut, tetapi juga dalam kecepatan lambat, memungkinkan kita untuk
melihat dengan detil apa yang sesungguhnya terjadi.
Dalam
konteks kartun VR1, kita dapat melihat kembali cerita-cerita yang telah berlalu
dalam sepakbola dan menikmatinya dari sudut/perspektif (humoris) yang berbeda.
Earlier
episodes of VR1 were written mostly (only) in English as they appeared in
blogimo – public blog established by Jakarta
Post. However, as VR1 tells stories from both western and eastern (Indonesian)
style of humour, it is only logical to deliver the more Indonesian part of
humour in Indonesian language.
VR1
(or, as I often call Mr. Replay) does not always make an appearance in the
cartoons. And when he does, he is not always the main character of the story
either.
I
hope Mr. Replay and his party of friends, allies, nemesis and football
compatriots will continue to entertain you.

Episode-episode awal VR1 sebagian besar
(semua) ditulis dalam bahasa Inggris karena muncul di blogimo – blog publik
yang diprakarsai oleh The Jakarta Post.
Tetapi, karena VRI menyampaikan cerita-cerita dalam gaya
humor barat dan timur (Indonesia),
maka sangat logis apabila menyampaikan humor yang lebih ke-Indonesia-an dalam
bahasa Indonesia pula.
VR1 (sering saya sebut Mr. Replay) tidak selalu
muncul dalam episode kartun. Dan saat muncul, tidak selalu pula menjadi pemeran
utama.
Saya harap Mr. Replay dan kawan-kawan,
sekutu, lawan dan rekan seperjuangannya dalam sepakbola akan terus menghibur
semua orang.
